A Parked Subscription, and the Two Things That Surprise People
When a card on file expires, the payment gateway retries on a schedule rather than giving up immediately. When that schedule runs out, the subscription is parked in a state called Past Due and left alone. Nothing further happens to it on its own.
Two things about that state are genuinely counter-intuitive, and both are worth knowing before you go near your card details.
The outstanding balance is not collected automatically
If you owe a balance and your subscription resumes, the next scheduled charge is the normal plan amount. It is not the plan amount plus what is owed.
An outstanding balance moves only on an explicit instruction. Until that instruction is given, the money sits where it is. Anybody reading a notice saying they owe an amount would reasonably assume the next payment collects it, so the notice states the real next charge and says plainly that the balance is separate.
Saving a new card does not restart it by itself
This is the obvious thing to try, and on its own it does nothing. Replacing an expired card with a working one updates the card and leaves the subscription exactly where it was: still parked, still owing the same amount.
So saving a card also issues the charge, on the one submit where you have just provided one. You are told before you enter anything, not after. The panel carries the amount, what it is for, and the fact that it is taken straight away, while the Cancel button is still sitting next to it. The button reads "Save card and pay" with the figure on it, rather than "Save".
If the charge is declined, that is reported separately from the card being saved. Your card was saved, which is real progress, and reporting the whole thing as a failure would make you enter it all again for nothing.
Why the state clears rather than lingering
A warning that cannot switch itself off is a warning people learn to ignore.
Past due is worked out from the live state of the subscription rather than from counters that only ever climb. Once the balance is settled and billing is normal again, the notice goes, which is the behavior that keeps it meaningful the next time it appears.
If you are in this state now
Open your billing tab, where the amount and the next charge are both stated. If anything about it does not match what you expect, contact us before paying rather than after.
