What You Type in the Editor Is What Appears on the Page

Type a numbered list in the editor and a numbered list appears on your website. Bold text stays bold, a heading stays a heading, and a paragraph break stays a paragraph break. That is the entire promise, and it is worth stating because plenty of website builders do not keep it.

Why formatting gets lost elsewhere

An editor produces structured markup and a design has its own opinions about how that markup should look. When a design's stylesheet strips the numbering off lists, or flattens headings to match a decorative style, your structure survives in the stored content and disappears on the page.

The result is text that looked right when you wrote it and reads as an undifferentiated block to a visitor. Worse, it is hard to report, because in the editor it still looks correct.

So the content you write is styled to preserve what you typed. A list has its markers, headings are visibly headings and sit in the right order, and paragraphs are separated.

Where you can write

On any editable page, covered in rich text editing on every page. Beyond the standard pages, you can add your own: a teaching page, a project diary, a page for a single production. That is custom pages, and each one gets its own address, which you can choose with custom slugs.

Formatting worth using, and formatting worth avoiding

Use headings to break anything longer than a few paragraphs. People scan before they read, and a page with no headings gives a scanner nothing to hold onto.

Use lists for things that are genuinely lists. Credits, skills, dates. Do not use them for prose, which reads as fragmented rather than organized.

Avoid using bold for emphasis more than about once a paragraph. Bold works by contrast, so text with a lot of it has none.

The wider question of what to actually write is in good content for actors and the advantages of blogging.
